The Franciscan Juan of the Angels was considered one of the glories of Spanish mysticism, and among the great preachers and writers of Counter-Reformation Spain. Unfortunately, he is greatly overshadowed by his contemporaries: Teresa of Avila, Ignatius of Loyola, John of the Cross, and Peter of Alcantara. Fray Juan’s The Conquest of the Kingdom of God is one the few books he wrote that is translated into English. Fray Juan writes: “Although in the Scriptures Jesus is given many different names, none was more highly valued by Him as Shepherd… Before He was born in the flesh, He tended the angels… for all without exception have their eyes on Him… Then when is born, He fed men with the Spirit and then with His flesh and blood…”
