The Dusseldorf Poor Clare Colettines left their monastery on this day in 1876. They had gone to Holland fleeing Bismark’s Kulturkampf, and were now going to America to begin a new foundation there. The German Franciscan Father Gregory made the arrangements to bring them to the United States. Ven. Antonio de Margil, the great apostle of Texas, was born in Spain in 1657. Father Margil wrote a number of letters, some of them (probably) to Poor Clares, judging from their names. One is addressed to Rev. Mother Abbess Anna Coleta, and was dated November 23, 1712. The ones we have in our library that are addressed to the Carmelites of his acquaintance are full of wisdom and spiritual insight.
