On September 29, 1874, Sister Mary Maddalena penned a complete and formal consecration of herself to God. The paper on which this is written was found only in 1932. It was found sewed in a tiny pocket-like pouch which she always kept with her from 1874 until the day of her death: during the day she pinned it on her habit, where, covered by the guimpe, it rested over her heart; during the night she kept it under her pillow. It was providential that her wish to have this piece of writing placed with her in the grave was not known and that her desire to be buried in her old and patched habit was not complied with; otherwise, this precious document might never have been discovered.
This intimate expression of her soul, of which nobody seems to have known except her spiritual director, to whom she submitted it for approval, reveals a heroic relinquishing of herself to God, an ardent longing for suffering, even for death as a martyr—all ennobled by the merit of obedience, -- she simply makes a holocaust of herself. It seems that an important development took place in her soul, a development that marked the completion of her break with her past. From that time till her dying day, the embrace of the nail-pierced Hand never relaxed.
