On this day in 1543, St. Ignatius of Loyola wrote to Sister Teresa Rejadella of the Monastery of Santa Clara. In the letter, he answers her questions regarding Holy Communion: As to daily Communion, we should recall that in the early Church everybody received daily… It is true that St. Augustine said that he would neither praise nor blame daily Communion, but he did on the other hand exhort everyone to receive on Sundays… What I mean is this…if apart from mortal sins … you think that your soul derives help and is inflamed with love for our Creator and Lord, and you receive with this intention, finding by experience that this spiritual food soothes, supports, settles, and preserves you for His greater service, praise, and glory, you may without doubt receive daily; in fact, it would be better for you to do so.
