- In the early days of the Evansville foundation, made in 1897 by Mother Maddalena, the Sisters were not very well known at first. Miss Anna Doyle, an Evansville lady remembered:
When their provisions got down to one-half loaf of bread, the Reverend Mother divided this bread among her twelve Sisters, leaving nothing for herself. Being pressed by the others to take their portion, she steadfastly refused, and commanded them to eat. She then went into the chapel to pray to St. Anthony to send them something for the next meal.
Her prayers were answered, for it was my own mother who, though unconscious of their supreme want; suggested that we send them two large loaves and thirteen little fishes. Mother Maddalena remarked, when she saw the basket of provisions: ‘See what St. Anthony has sent us!
