Maria de la Luz Camacho, a martyr of the Mexican persecution in the early 20th century, was a beautiful young woman planning to enter the Capuchin Poor Clares. She died on December 30, 1934. The common people of Mexico were determined to keep the faith alive, despite government interference and harassment. Priests were forced to do their ministry in disguise, coming to prearranged meetings for Mass and the Sacraments. After the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, people would spend hours in adoration. When Our Lord came to Maria de la Luz’s home, she hardly ever left Him, preferring to watch all night in adoration. Once, she was caught sprinkling perfume on the flowers, “I want Him to remember that Maria of Coyoacán is the same as Mary of Bethany.” (See also December 30th)
