Sister Teresa Mieczyslawa Kowalska, a Capuchin Poor Clare of Przasnysz, Poland, and thirty-five members of her Community were taken by the Nazis to the Dzialdowo concentration camp. She declared, “I will not leave this place. I sacrifice my life so that the Sisters can return to the convent.” She died July 25, 1941 and the nuns were released on August 7th. She was beatified, along with 107 other victims of the Nazi regime, on June 13, 1999, by Pope John Paul II. He said during the beatification ceremony: “How can we not give thanks that the faithful can approach the sacraments unhindered and can listen to the word of God… Today we are celebrating the victory of those who, in our century, gave their lives for Christ… in order to possess life forever in his glory. This victory has a special character, since it was shared by clergy and laity alike , by young people and old … In the group of blessed there are religious brothers and sisters who persevered in the service of charity and in offering their torments for their neighbor.”
