When Pope John Paul II was shot on this day in 1981, he was taken by ambulance to the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome. This was founded by Father Agostino Gemelli, O.F.M., who wrote of St. Clare: “Having received her spiritual foundation from a great master, she felt the influence of his [Francis’] teaching so strongly that she dared to request and obtain from the popes the vow of absolute poverty.”
