On February 11, 1973, Our Sunday Visitor magazine featured the Poor Clares of Malawi. The pictures accompanying the article are quite stunning, and they are ample testimony of how the liturgy can be successfully enculturated. It described the faithful, lively, and vibrant Eucharistic liturgies of our African Sisters in religion: “Young, black Sisters, clad in the brown habit of their order mix ancient African customs into their liturgy. Encouraged by French Sisters who founded the convent years ago, and with the blessing of the Bishop of Lilongwe, they take this ancient sacrifice and make it uniquely their own.”
