In 1943, Bishop Nicolini gave permission for a whole Jewish refugee family to take up hiding in the Poor Clare Colettine monastery in Assisi. The family lived in a room at one end of a corridor, and little Brigitte, who had been born in the monastery on September 8th, had full run of the cloister halls, often visiting the nuns in their workrooms and Chapter Room. The family remained with the nuns until the end of the war.
