Mother Maddalena wrote about her visit to the sanctuary of Our Lady of the Angels in Assisi. They stopped in Assisi as they left Italy to come to America:
We arrived at Assisi at 1:00 PM. and immediately went to the sanctuary of the Angels, in the same chapel where our holy Father St. Francis spoke with Our Lord and His Blessed Mother. The emotion at those celestial places is indescribable.
Later, after Mother Maddalena had made a permanent foundation in Omaha, she continued to be devoted to Our Lady of the Angels.
It was through the Poor Clares that the Third Order Secular [Secular Franciscans] was first propagated at Omaha. They encouraged the people to gain the Portiuncula indulgence with such success that, at the very first time it could be gained since their arrival, the pastor of the parish church had to send to the convent for an additional supply of altar breads.
