Mother Maddalena established the Omaha monastery in 1879. One of the first nuns to join her was called “Sister Delores,” in honor of Our Lady of Sorrows. Claire Agnes McClusky, as a small child, lived next door to the Poor Clares. Mother Maddalena and Sister Delores taught Claire how to sew and embroider. Claire Agnes recounts:
Sister Delores was slender and seemed to my childish eyes to be sad, and taught me to hem a handkerchief for Papa, and in my enthusiasm for my work. I stuck the needle in my finger and wept, and Mother Magdalen said, “My dear, just look at your work, and that last stitch you made is the smallest and nicest you have made.” So, the tears were forgotten.
