In Lourdes, many of the cures do not actually occur in the healing waters, but in front of the Blessed Sacrament. On August 12, 1950, a young Austrian woman named Edeltraud Fulda suffering from Addison’s disease made a pilgrimage to Lourdes. Her disease was in its last stages, as there was little science could do at that time for that type of a glandular condition. Edeltraud went first to the healing baths, after which there was a procession of the Blessed Sacrament. “The Blessed Sacrament came nearer and nearer… My heart raced toward Him and called to Him: ‘Jesus, Son of David, have mercy upon us!’ … And then He stood before me… ‘Lord, if Thou wilt, Thou canst heal me!” On August 23, 1954 the medical commission in Lourdes decreed that the healing was “incapable of explanation on medical grounds.” Her cure was the 51st one to be recognized as a miracle.
