Pedro Fernandez de Cordoba, the Count of Feria, died on this day in 1552. His widow, Ana Ponce de Leon, felt called to enter the monastery of Saint Clare. There was much opposition on the part of her relatives, as Ana was quite wealthy, and her spiritual director, St. John of Avila, was accused of influencing her. She overcame all obstacles, and St. John himself preached the homily when she received the veil on July 22, 1554.
