After her husband, Boleslas, died in 1279, Cunegunda at once entered the monastery of S. Clare, which she herself had founded at Sandek. Her words upon entering the monastery are memorable: "I have come to be your servant. Forget what I once have been. Only remember that another lowly handmaid has been added to your Community.” She lived in the monastery for thirteen years and died, July 24th, 1292, full of merits and good works. She was celebrated for numerous miracles, both before and after her death. The veneration paid to her by the people, from time immemorial, was ratified in 1691, by Pope Alexander VIII. The people of Poland and Lithuania had chosen her for their principal Patron. This choice was, likewise, ratified by the Holy See, in 1715. She was canonized by Pope John Paul II.
