During her great trial in 1888, when Mother Maddalena and her sister, Mother Mary Constance, were slandered and accused, the Minister General thought of having them return to Rome, as a way of having them quietly sent away. Mother Constance wrote:
We cannot make out the reason why the Most Reverend Father intends to recall us; it is strange that the Father General finds that we have done enough for the order of St. Clare and that he will recall us. Say to the Father General that we have not finished our task and that we have not done enough. As long as we have life, we must be doing. This is the repose we seek. We should be ashamed off ourselves to lay down the arms.
