On March 7, 1876, when things looked gloomy indeed and hopeless, Mother Maddalena wrote to her sister, Matilda: God is watching over us; He protects us. Be sure of it. We feel sure that He will keep us from all dangers till the end. My faith is firm that it will be so...This morning Father Hecker told us: ‘I see the necessity of the contemplative orders in the United States, since they are the opposite of our life, which is only activity. I would not have said so five years ago; but now I am forced to say it, since I understand it.’ This Father is a holy man, a convert, and is very influential. He has promised to help.” Father Hecker’s Cause for Beatification is pending in Rome.
