The two had spent a few weeks together at the convent in Marseilles as Mother Maddalena prepared to sail to America. A series of sad misunderstandings, miscommunications, and trials had frayed their friendship; but Mother Maddalena continued to write friendly letters: I hope that nothing will happen to break our union and fraternal charity in the Heart of Jesus. We have suffered; may it all be for the greater glory of God.
