May 15, 1944, was the arrest of Don Aldo Brunacci, a priest of Assisi. He often brought Jewish refugees to the French Poor Clares in Assisi. One time a man of Polish descent, but who had always lived in France, escaped with his family across the Alps to Assisi. Their accents were a problem, until a solution was found to masquerade them as refugees from French-speaking Tunisia. They, too, found refuge with the Poor Clares.
