In the morning of January 29, 1902, Mother Maddalena received the news of the death of her sister, Mother Mary Constance. She at once went before the Blessed Sacrament to pour forth her tears together with her prayers. She had dearly loved Constance. After a little while she gave the signal for the Sisters to assemble in the chapel; she then announced in her calm, low voice: “Let us gain the indulgence for Constance, who is dead.” It was later observed that Mother Maddalena imposed upon herself special acts of self-denial for the repose of the soul of her companion on the way of the cross.
