On this day in 1960 the Convent of Las Descalzas [discalced/barefoot]was open to the public for the first time. This monastery of Poor Clares was built by the Spanish royal family in Madrid as a place for their burials, and as a special place of intercession for the Spanish royals. It is still a monastery, although during parts of the day the cloister is lifted so that tours may come to view the fabulous artwork.
