The Archbishop who welcomed Mother Maddalena to New Orleans was Napoleon Joseph Perché. He was born at Angers, France, January 10, 1805. In accordance with the old Catholic custom, no time was lost in having the child baptized, a ceremony which in this case was performed three hours after the child's birth, in the old Gothic Church of Notre Dame. His name indicates that his parents were clients of St. Joseph, and that they were admirers and adherents of Emperor Napoleon I. A question was raised as to whether any one bearing the name of Napoleon had ever been canonized and upon diligent search of the Roman Archives, a St. Napoleon was discovered.
