The great abbess of the monastery of St Clare in Nuremberg, Caritas Pirkheimer (+ 1532), composed a Prayer Book which enjoyed great popularity among her contemporaries. Along with other writings, it is now kept in the Munich State Library. It contains two series of invocations to the Child of Bethlehem. They are clearly based on Holy Scripture and thus still speak to the heart of the modern Christian. They are in the form of a bouquet addressed to the divine Infant who is the Savior awaited by the people: Ave Jesu! Little Child awaited by all peoples! Come to me : — with the holy Sacraments, to cheer and nourish me; — with your Essence, O Christ, that ever in my heart I may revere you; — with yourself, O Jesus, come, Lord Jesus! Amen.
