St. Catherine of Bologna asked her Abbess’ permission to spend the night before the Lord’s birth.  She began her vigil on Christmas Eve, spending the time in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and in prayer.   Shortly before Midnight, the Virgin appeared to her and placed the Infant in her arms.  St. Catherine is often depicted in this way in paintings.
