St. Charles de Foucauld spent November 5-15, 1897, in extra prayer and recollection during a private Retreat. He wrote: “You dwell, my Lord Jesus, in the Holy Eucharist. You are here within a few feet of me in the tabernacle. How close you are, my God, my Savior, my Jesus, my Brother, my Spouse, my Beloved… When one loves, one feels that all hours spent beside the Beloved are well spent.” Charles had spent several years with the Poor Clares in Nazareth and in Jerusalem, working as their gardener, and Mother Elizabeth of Calvary had urged him to become a priest.
