Mother Maddalena had no idea that she was to be appointed as the Superior of the new foundation in America:
After the Mass he (Father General), having been permitted by the bishop… went into the garden, near the grotto of our Lady of La Salette, where all we Sisters were grouped around him. He, resplendent with a celestial light, addressed the two Sisters. He said to Mother Mary Maddalena: ‘My daughter, have you taken the vow of obedience?’-‘Yes, my Father.’—‘Well, my Sister Mary Maddalena, in virtue of holy obedience I name you Mother Superior.’ ‘Oh! My Father!’ And this humble Mother, bending low her head, tried to answer; but the Father General insisted that she should accept. And turning towards Mother Constance: ‘And you, my daughter, I appoint you Mother Vicaress. You must now love her not only as your sister, but also as your Mother, and you must obey her faithfully as your Abbess.’ Having knelt down before her sister, Mother Maddalena, Constance took her cord and pressed it upon her heart, indicating obedience, and kissed Maddalena’s veil as she said: ‘My Mother!‘—‘My Sister!’ replied Mother Maddalena.
